Harley-Davidson
The last few weeks have been rather rainy so when I received a double blessing today in the fact that we had good weather and my boss let me out of work early I decided to take a ride on my Harley-Davidson motorcycle.
Because the weather was so nice there were a lot of other writers out on the road today. As I live in northern Ohio, there tends to be a lot more Harley-Davidson riders then import riders on the roads most days. One thing that I noticed today, and to be honest have been noticing more and more over the last few months, is the fact that a lot of new riders must be on the roads.
Is it just me or do people seem to be getting dumber these days? Everyone pushed to have helmet laws enacted in our state for the good of everyone but that doesn’t stop immature people from doing dumb things. Furthermore, I see a lot of immature behavior from the riding community as a whole but this applies double to those who are riding imports.
It seems very simple to me. Motorcycle safety boils down to just a few things. First of all, make sure that you have your proper gear on. A helmet is an absolute necessity, not an option. Consider purchasing to good riding jackets, one for warm weather one for cool, and start wearing one because it is also a must along with proper riding boots, gloves, and eye protection.
Once you have your gear in place, make sure that you observe safe riding habits. The number one mistake that I see people making while riding is performing lane changes without any type of signal. Unlike cars or trucks, motorcycle riders have two ways to signal their intent to change lanes. You can use the mechanical signal located on your bike or you can use a hand signal to let everybody else know that you intend to change lanes. I don’t care which one you go with but make sure that you use one of them!
Let’s make sure that everyone makes a concentrated effort to do whatever needs to be done in order to ride safely, reduce injuries, and cut in half the number of motorcycle riders die every year because they failed to take simple precautions.
